Scripture: Philippians 4:11-13
"I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me."
Meditation:

"[The apostle Paul and his company] . . . encountered hardships and privations, and were beset with dangers on every side. As they advanced, they were compelled to face 'perils of waters,' and 'perils of robbers' (2 Corinthians 11:26). In the towns and cities through which they passed, they were . . . surrounded by dangers seen and unseen. But Paul and Barnabas had learned to trust in God's power to deliver. Their hearts were filled with fervent love for perishing souls. As faithful shepherds in search of the lost sheep, they had no thought of their own ease and convenience. Forgetful of self, they faltered not when weary, hungry, and cold. They had in view but one object--the salvation of those who had wandered far from the fold of safety."1

"If ever his ardor in the path of duty flagged for a moment, one glance at the cross caused [Paul] to gird up anew the loins of his mind and press forward in the way of self-denial. In his labors for his brethren he relied much upon the manifestation of infinite love in the sacrifice of Christ, with its subduing, constraining power."2
