20th General Conference Session

Mission in Action - The Pacific Region
Adapted from the report by Branislav Jaksic - Regional Secretary covering his area from Mongolia to French Polynesia.
Branislav Jaksic

Who would think that 20 years ago that we would go to China? Or Mongolia, or to Vietnam? But today the message is going everywhere and people are pleading to hear the word of God. In one country people asked me, Who is this Jesus? Tell us, Who is this Jesus you talk about? Yes, we have to tell them about Jesus, about our Saviour, our Redeemer, about our Creator, about our Friend, the only one that has answers for the problems of all humanity.

Australia: We have a new Union headquarters in Australia. We have our own camp ground there with buildings and facilities for conferences. It has been suggested to me that some day maybe we could hold a GC Session there.

New Zealand: New Zealand is a very beautiful country and we praise the Lord that the message is going forward with power and strength. New Zealand has similar weather like Australia but a bit colder in the winter. What is very wonderful about New Zealand is that the young people are very zealous in the Lord’s work, like in Australia as well. In every state and mission we proclaim the message.

Papua New Guinea is a big island above Australia. If you study the history about Papua New Guinea, not long ago this was a country where people practiced cannibalism. I spoke with one brother and I asked him about this, and he told me, “Oh brother, when I was a little boy I ate humans. My grandpa would catch them, and he would eat the little brains, and the members of the family would eat other parts of the body, and we children would eat the feet and legs. This man was transformed into vegetarianism and today he is a member of God’s church. The light had come to him, he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior.

We are almost completing the headquarters in New Guinea. They don’t have chairs to sit on, they don’t have proper beds to sleep on, they are very poor people, but they are very rich in the Word of God. They love the Lord. When they come to what we call church, they start singing, when they close the meeting they sing, during collection of offerings they sing, when the meeting is finished they sing, and when they walk out they sing. They don’t show long faces. They don’t have beautiful cars, no beautiful seats to sit on (but for me they provided because it is difficult for me to sit on the floor). They brought a chair with three legs and they leaned it against a tree, and I sat on that chair. I was with them and we rejoiced together. When we have meetings in New Guinea, in one place we have about 20 members only, but when we have conference in that particular place, approximately 300-400 people come together. They are Protestants, Catholics, Adventists. “How did you travel here?” I asked them.

“I walked one week to come to this place.”

“What shoes did you wear?”

“I have come barefoot all along.”

They come to hear the word of God. I praise the Lord for He has given me the opportunity to work among these people. They are very dear to the Lord’s heart and to my heart.

Fiji: Our work in Fiji is also going well.

Western Samoa: Praise the Lord because we have brethren and sisters in both islands.

Vanuatu: It used to be called New Hebrides. One brother from Australia invested his own money and built a school in Vanuatu. This school has now 300 students and he plans to expand it to accommodate 500 students. The school is run by our principles and many parents from other private schools are bringing their children into our school because of its high standards.

French Polynesia: Why is it called French Polynesia? This is an archipelago governed by France. One sister built a beautiful little church in Garabao, and now the brethren worship in this building. The climate there is tropical, very warm and so are the brethren, they reflect the warmth of the country. They sing continually, and as I told you how they do in New Guinea, so in French Polynesia. We also have a camp ground in Tahiti in an island called Wuahini. One brother donated the land very near the sea, and all conferences, youth gatherings, and spiritual conferences are held there. When you arrive in Tahiti they give you a royal welcome, they bring flowers and put them around your neck. They sing at the airport and every person brings a wreath of flowers and put around your neck to welcome you. With great joy they begin to sing and everybody at the airport is watching what is going on. They ask, “Who is this person who arrived? Who are these people?”

And I tell the brethren, “Let them know we are having a conference, tell everyone in the airport that they can come.” So they give leaflets to everyone, and we have a big conference. In Australia when we have such gatherings, we have to invite people one month in advance or 6 weeks ahead, and few people show up. When we are having conferences in Tahiti, on Tuesday or Wednesday I ask, “Brother, have you sent the invitations out?” They say, “No, brother.” Then I say, “Brother, no one will come!” But on Thursday they spread the invitations everywhere and on Friday night and Saturday we are packed with people. People just come and we have a wonderful feast for the whole weekend. Most of our brethren that joined our message were from the majority church, most of them were fishermen. The sea is everything to them, the shells, the fish is their food - they live from the sea. When we took the message to Tahiti, and when we told them that we are vegetarians and do not use any flesh food, they asked, “not even fish?” “Fish is flesh.” “Then how shall we live?” My answer was, “Just grow things.”

They grow watermelons, cantaloupes, and they live now better financially than when they were fishermen. They cannot grow enough, so much is the demand.

New Caledonia: This is a long narrow island and a number of small ones too. On the island of Mahre, one sister visited Noumea, the capital city of New Caledonia, and there she heard our message. She was advised, “Sister, preach the message to your husband by your life. Preach the message by your life! Don’t force it, just live out the Reform Message.” She did and it had a great effect on him. After awhile he noticed the changes in her life and he asked her, “What is going on with you? Is that about the Reform message you talked to me about?” She said, “Praise the Lord that by His grace I have changed.” He said, “I want to change also!”

I happened to be there when he came to Noumea and we studied together and he said to me, “Brother, I want to join the Reform, but I don’t want to join by myself, I want the whole congregation of my church to change, and when we are ready, we will let you know and you come back.” And so it happened, the whole congregation accepted and they were rebaptized and received into the church. Underneath the name of Seventh Day Adventist was added, “Reform Movement.”

Japan: What a joy we had there! The young people can sing beautifully. The sisters there helped to build a beautiful church dedicated.

South Korea. The headquarters is in Kimchon, perhaps some of you have had the privilege of have been there already. It is a beautiful church that the brethren have, a magnificent building. I tell you, brothers and sisters, for many years I have had the great joy of being with these dear people. You are enjoying their hospitality and hearing the beautiful music and singing now, and I was privileged to have this for the last 12 years.

Mongolia. They had been under the communist regime for 70 years. Now praise the Lord, freedom has come to them and the message entered there also. This building is our church. They still live a nomadic life, their houses are built with timber and other materials, and they move around and stop with their cattle and sheep. A very beautiful country.

China. By the grace of God I have been going to China for 8 years, and we have brothers and sisters here from China tonight. Those 8 years for me were joyful ones, we formed a close bond with the brothers and sisters there and the Lord is being glorified and the message is going forward there.

Vietnam. A young brother explained the message to these young people. I was invited to present our Reform Message to these young people from the majority church. The father is in our congregation tonight. The work is just beginning there.

Cambodia. We don’t have members there yet, but our Sabbath Bible Lessons are going there, and one Adventist minister is translating our lessons, printing them, and distributing them in his congregation.

There are many other countries, and the word is Mission Possible. Is it possible for us to proclaim this message to everybody in the world? Napoleon said, “Impossible is the vocabulary of the foolish dictionary.” Is our vocabulary from a foolish dictionary? Brethren, we must not think that it is impossible for us to proclaim the message. What were the disciples accused of? They turned the world upside down. How many were there? Just 12. How many are we? How did they manage to do this great work? By divine power. The Holy Spirit came upon them, and they proclaimed the message with power.

Today we need this same power. The message is to be proclaim with a loud voice to tell everybody. Whatever the difficulties with which we may have to contend, whatever the trials we may have to endure, the gracious promise is always ours, ‘Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.’ We are to urge upon them the message” (Evangelism, p. 15).

The commission is for us as well - to observe all things. “The gospel is to be presented, not as a lifeless theory, but as a living force to change the life. God desires that the receivers of His grace shall be witnesses to His power.” The Desire of Ages, p. 826.

Dear brothers and sisters, have we experienced this change in life? Evangelism is our real work, we must not be narrow-minded and think that the Lord wants only 144,000 and that is it. The Lord wants the whole world to be saved, for God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believe in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. This is what we must tell the world.

Young people, the Lord wants you to come and work for Him. Do not be fearful, brethren and young people, our commission is, Go! The Lord will be with us. In Isaiah 6:8, “I heard the voice of the Lord saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.” Are we ready to give this answer to the Lord, Here am I send me? When are we coming to that kind of thinking, to that kind of decision “here am I send me”? It is not necessary that all of us go to foreign countries, just go to your neighbors, relatives, friends, and tell everyone.

I remember some years ago, I young man in Australia accepted the message, and he had very rich parents. His father said to him, If you join this church I will disown you. But he accepted the message, and his father told him, “Get out of here, I don’t want you here anymore!” The mother crying, prepared him a little suitcase and hug the son. He came and stayed with me, and told me, “Brother, I don’t have any place to live and this is the little bag my mother prepared for me.” I talked it over with my wife, and we had a little humble house, and I told him, That is all we can offer you! He accepted it gladly and said to me, “I feel like telling everybody about Jesus, do you think something is wrong with me?” “No, no, just tell everybody,” I said. That kind of zeal is what we need.

The Lord wants us to tell everybody the message because the time is short.

Arise and shine! We need to shine and reflect the light of Jesus and “enlarge the place of thy tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of thine habitations: spare no, lengthen thy cords, and strengthen thy stakes; for thou shalt break forth on the right hand and on the left; and thy seed shall inherit the Gentiles, and make the desolate cities to be inhabited” (Isaiah 54:2, 3).

May the Lord bless us, when this message is proclaimed to the whole world, and when this gospel will go to every nation and tongue, what will happen then? What did Jesus say? ( Matt. 24:14) “This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world,” and then Jesus will come! It will be the end of all sorrows, pain and suffering.
